MovableType Sucks
Sunday, February 8, 2004
Apparently I am not the only one feeling the effects of MovableType’s poor design when your blog grows. Erik is upset with speed issues of his site. I have also been very upset with the speed of my site as well. I don’t think my site is the scope of his, however now that I have 560 posts and 1400 comments, posting entries takes at least a minute and comments just as long.
While I am in no hurry with the entry posting, I do take issue with it taking forever to post a comment. I am ending up with a lot of duplicate comments because people are hitting the post button twice. I am also irritated that rebuilding my entire site takes a good five minutes and many times will time out. I solved some of the timeout issues by shitcanning mt-blacklist (until 1.63 is stable at least), but that isn’t an ideal solution.
From a community post in Orkut’s MovableType forum, I found the following bits of information on the internet, but most of it seems a bit over my head since I don’t really understand how the whole movabletype system works.
Speeding Up MovableType From Birdhouse
Performance Tuning MovableType from Cemper.com
I to look for a better solution than MovableType, or at least a solution to the slowdowns my site has. I am hoping that MovableType 3 will improve on some of these issues, but that seems so far away.

I blame TypePad. The thing is, they’ve already got the fix!!! They’re just not releasing it to us.

I’m having the MT slowdown bigtime now, and I have pretty much the same sitch: 500 or so entries and 1000 plus comments. Rebuilding an entry ends in a timeout everytime, and 2/3 of those times, the entry doesn’t post. I use MT-blackout, but I guess I gotta take it out so things get a little better, but still, this isn’t the biggest blog out there.
I’m pretty shocked that MT runs into this problem. Seems like poor programming to have Mt rendered useless after it hits a certain size.
I’m not sure I’ll use MT 3.0 — unless they’ve dramatically improved it. I’ve hit the wall and I’d rather change to another software package than hit the wall again in a year.
I don’t see how Typekey helps, btw. If you’re a pharma peddler, why not just keep registering typekey ids over and over indefinitely? I mean, the spam I get is from a million different hotmail addresses, so how is this different? Every time I get spam, I remove the comment, and ban the IP address. They just spoof a new IP address and hit me again.
