MarsEdit Wishlist

I stopped using MarsEdit a few months ago and instead started to post my Weblog entries using the Wordpress backend (with the help of Steve Smith’s Tiger Design). Rather than just post another link to the announcement of Daniel’s acquisition of the tool, here’s a few reasons I stopped using it. Hopefully Daniel can put them in the back of his mind for future enhancements. :)
- The UI feels outdated. Drawers, the Jaguar-era icons, etc. The drawers seem like a waste of space (especially the Weblog listing one).
- Uploading images isn’t nearly as intuitive as dragging it onto my Transmit droplets. I’d love to be able to do it all in MarsEdit easily.
- Adding keywords is more difficult than it should be. I wish there was a keyword editor below the title a la Yojimbo rather than in a separate tab.
- Editing trackbacks, enclosures, and the date is a pain since I can only do it via the menu.
And finally, for the love of god, Daniel, please don’t spend time writing a WYSIWYG view for writing posts. When ecto implemented that, I ditched it for MarsEdit: the rest of the app suffered I think.
Here’s looking forward to the new breath of life.

You do realize that in both ecto and MarsEdit you can turn off the WYSIWYG view, right?
I use ecto because I like how it uploads images and I like that it leaves me in “code” view all the time. The extras are easy to get to, I can define categories, it works with WordPress, etc.

I have it turned off in both. I just got annoyed that Adrienne invested so much time in the WYSIWYG editor in ecto because I think it stifled any other innovations imo.

I would probably agree with what you said, yeah. I also think he’s losing a lot of customers and long-time users in taking so long to get ecto 3.0 out the door or even to beta status. :-(
